Many studies show how certain food can trip your metabolism to overdrive. Consuming these foods can help you shed the fat and start seeing abs instead of flab. Here are three foods that can be called fat burners for men.

Colorful, Leafy Vegetables

A salad a day, keeps the pounds away! Cliché as it sounds you need the “phytonutrients” in leafy greens like spinach, kale, chard, and others. It’s more than what’s in your multivitamin – without the nutrients from vegetables, you will not be able to carry out the biochemical proccesses you need to expend energy to the fullest.

Fiber content from vegetables also makes you feel full, reducing chances of binge eating or late night snacks.

It’s also good to get in some low-glycemic fruits such as berries and apples – but stay away from the high-glycemic, sugary tropical fruits. Recent studies have shown apples to be capable of reducing blood cholesterol, blood pressure and prediabetes syndrome.

Chicken Breast (with skin removed)

Protein Protein Protein! Got it?! Chicken breasts contain lots of proteins. With the skin removed, a chicken breast the size of a deck of cards can deliver you one full meal of the required proteins, carbs and fats. Add vegetables and sprinkle some black pepper to taste and you’ve got a power meal!

In general, our diets are too low in protein, and too high in carbs and fake “frankenstein fats”. If you up the protein while working out hard, you WILL lose bodyfat while keeping the muscle. In general, you want to get 1g of protein per pound of desired bodyweight, each and every day. Even rest days.

Cinnamon

It’s not really food. Cinnamon is a spice which already gives you one great benefit – it lowers blood sugar levels thanks to its chromium content. Studies have shown that just 1 to 2 teaspoons a day and it can help reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels! Add it to your protein shake, cereal or flavor your milk and coffee with it.

Plenty of Water

Again it’s not food but it’s an important part of burning fats. Water helps speed up metabolism in the body. A large part of plasma and blood is made up of water. In water, various processes like oxidizing fat are done.

Red Pepper

Don’t chew on one yet. Red pepper contains Capsaicin, a potent thermogenic agent that can help burn fat. Enjoy red peppers with meals like lean Chili and eggs.

Exercise by lifting free weights and burn those calories!

Burn Fat with Exercise

It’s really no rocket science. If you’re a healthy individual, you gain the flab through two things:

  • Too much intake of food (calories) – even worse when those calories are from processed foods
  • Too little calories being burned (through activity)

With exercise, you simply make your body burn calories. Every time you exercise, you burn a certain number of calories or kilojoules.  If you ate 2,000 calories (for an average healthy American male), you just burn about 2,500 to 3,000 calories.

However, you should have workout days and rest days. That way, you also have time to rest and replenish your body with nutrients. Remember, your body needs calories to build up cells too. Over exercising will do more harm to your body than good. These are some of the best fat burning exercise for men.

Weight Lifting (at least 30 Minutes)

Depending on the body part, lifting weights can burn anywhere from 200 to 300 calories[2] in 30 minutes. Occasionally, it’s great to lift heavy and stress your system out a bit.

The fact is, if you’re a guy, and you’re not doing some form of resistance training, you’re not going to burn fat as fast as the next guy who is. It’s critical. It doesn’t need to be your every workout, but it does need to be done at least a couple times a week, preferably more.

We’re not just worried about burning calories – we want you to gain that muscle mass at the same time. It will make you look several times better. We’re more interested in your bodyfat percentage, not the scale. You might maintain the same weight when lifting, and that’s okay – muscle is more dense than fat, and it’s far more attractive. It’s what you look like and how you feel, not just the number on the scale.

Again, it relies on making muscles bigger. Bigger muscles means that more calories are needed to maintain it every day. After all, the main organ that needs fat as fuel is the muscle.

Running / Cardio (5 mph) for 30 Minutes

Running is a great exercise for beginners. Most will want to do walks first before gradually increasing speed. Tweak your run by sprinting up to 10 mph for 10 to 15 seconds followed by 45 seconds of normal running and you can burn even more fats! Running for 30 minutes burns 345 calories.

Swimming is also an incredible tool, but only if you have decent technique or a good coach.

Universal Nutrition Animal Cuts

Universal Nutrition has a long line of great supplements. The Animal training pack Cuts is just one of them. Its main focus is to give you hard and well defined muscles. We recently compared this with OxyELITE, and this one has a few question marks, which include guggelsterones and a diuretic complex. It just doesn’t seem as safe, but it is from the Animal guys, whose stuff we mostly love to death.

Cellucor Super HD

From a company with a great history of supplements. Super HD from Cellucor has the keen advantage of  appetite suppression, and their key factor here is that they have lots of good cognitive mental focus boosters. While that’s great, and this stuff feels good… it just doesn’t burn fat for us like the others listed here. And at the end of the day, that’s what we really want.

USPLabs Recreate

This is the “lower-stimulant” fat burner that was from USPLabs before they ingeniously invented OxyELITE Pro. It’s good to take when starting to ween off of caffeine, at just around 50mg caffeine per serving. It’s not officially recommended to stack it with OxyELITE Pro, but it’s been done before for a killer fat burning kick (half doses of each).

But if you were to choose between Recreate and Oxy Elite… there’s not much of a question. Go for the Pro purple pill.

iForce Nutrition Dexaprine

It has gone through many revisions however Dexaprine maintains its potency. A cocktail of natural extracts put your body into overdrive to burn fat. This stuff is strong, to say the least. Nearly overwhelming. If you have a strong stimulant tolerance, you might like this. If a cup of coffee hits you hard, then stay away, cuz this will knock you over.

ErgoShred

We’re huge fans of this one because of its flexibility. It’s not as potent as OEP or Dexaprine, and doesn’t work as well, but it’s got some great uses. At 50mg caffeine per capsule, you can basically dose it how you want.

Even if it’s late (like between 6 and 7pm), you can pop one last capsule to give you some energy until bedtime (depends on your stimulant tolerance). Do that with any other fat burner listed here… and you’ll be up all night!

BSN Hypershred

This one is a recent entry to the market after BSN started getting “beaten out” by new contenders like OxyELITE Pro. It doesn’t just help burn fat, it’s also a great energy supplement boasting “clean” energy. We’re fans, but there’s just better stuff out there.

Bonus: Compound 20, also by USPLabs

Now this one is interesting, because it’s not really a “fat burner”, per say. It’s a “leaning and hardening agent”, which acts to help shuttle sugar and water away from your fat and into your muscles.

While this isn’t a cheap supplement, and it really takes about 4+ weeks to fully kick in, it’s what we consider the most underrated supplement there is. OxyELITE Pro isn’t underrated. It’s rated, and rated high. But nobody knows that you can stack it with Compound 20 for a “tighter” feel, and an amazing ability to control your carbohydrate intake from turning to bodyfat. Pumps are better in the gym, and they’re better in bed with C20 as well.
